VILLA DELLE ROSE SODALITY OF GRAVEDIGGERS AT PIAZZA ARMERINA ENNA
Villetta delle rose, then Villetta Roma and Villetta Gen.le Ciancio
Sisters of the Becchini and / or Bastasi
Among the many Sodalizi a Piazza there was also that formed by the Becchis or Facchini or, as they were called in our City, Bastasi, probably derived from the Greek bastazo = help, support, carry, bear, carry away, who carries something on his shoulders ; also from the medieval Latin vastasius and bastasius = porter and from the Latin late bastaga = baggage.
The term was then also used to refer to a rude, rude, rude, slanderous man, or a scabbed woman (also caiòrda from Hebrew hajordah = skunk).
The church where they met was that of Santa Maria dell'Udienza that, most likely (the street and the stairway with this name along the first stretch of the Via Roma confirm it) existed under the house Rome (in the lower left corner of the photo).
Until the end of the nineteenth century, the church was also known as the church where, before the definitive burial, the bodies of the convicts were shot dead to death in the earthquake above.
The Becchini or Bastasi used to stop in Piazza Garibaldi on the central pavement called Tabarè (because it looked like a tray) with their ciumazzéddi (small cushions made from jute bags) that served to protect the shoulders on which the heavy weights lay.
In addition to these three names, he had another around the 30s: Villetta Francesco Crispi.
